Heading to Cameroon? Great choice! But before you pack your bags, here are the top things you absolutely must not bring into the country. Number one: Illegal drugs. Cameroon has zero tolerance for cocaine, heroin, cannabis, ecstasy or other controlled substances. Even small amounts can lead to serious legal trouble. Number two: Firearms, ammunition or explosives. Unless you have explicit prior approval from Cameroonian authorities, these are strictly off-limits. Three: Obscene or pornographic media. Cameroon’s customs officials may seize magazines, books, videos or DVDs that are deemed offensive to public decency. Four: Counterfeits and pirated content. Fake luxury items or unlicensed music, software or films are illegal and can be confiscated. Five: Hazardous chemicals or toxic substances. Industrial chemicals, certain pesticides or toxic waste are strictly controlled. Six: Fresh produce, seeds, live plants or unprocessed grains. These may bring pests or disease and are subject to strict restrictions. Seven: Alcohol and tobacco above duty-free allowances. Small amounts for personal use are okay—but large quantities without declaration can be seized or fined. Eight: Live animals or certain animal products, like raw meat, unpreserved dairy or exotic skins. Many of these require import permits or are totally banned under wildlife protection rules. Nine: Artifacts or culturally-important items without proper documentation. Bringing these items in — or out — without permits can get you into trouble. Ten: Large sums of CFA Francs or foreign currency. If you’re carrying a lot of money you need to declare it—otherwise it may raise red flags. Eleven: Medications. Personal meds in original packaging are usually fine—but controlled drugs require a valid prescription and may be checked at customs. And twelve: Items that look like they’re for commercial rather than personal use. If you bring many electronics, clothing or cosmetics without declaring them, you might face duties or penalties. In short: When in doubt — declare it. And pack smart so you can focus on exploring Africa in miniature without hassles. Safe travels to Cameroon!
